The first large-scale hybrid seawater desalination project in China combining UF-RO dual membrane process with low-temperature MED system. The system officially launched in December 2020, treating seawater of 150,000 tons per day and increasing residual heat recycle by 90%.

Scinor and Shougang conducted a one-year pilot test for the innovative thermal-membrane hybrid system in the early stage of the project, successfully verified the feasibility and capability of the technology. The system desalinates the brine of the low-temperature MED system, makes full use of the seawater temperature, omits seawater preheating and realizes the efficient use of resources.

The project from construction to operation finished within 11 months, which is a truly amazing accomplishment and a successful model for the whole industry. Main characteristics of the system also includes high salt content of the brine, three switchable working conditions, small footprint, short process flow, which are new records in the field of seawater desalination.

The project, supported by the research and development of the National Science and Technology Support Program, saves about 40 million tons of surface water per year and is a demonstration of great strategic significance for national and regional economy, social development and national security.

Phase III&IV are under planning, the desalination capacity will be 2.8 million cubic meters per day, and the operation capacity will be further enhanced, to exceed 1 billion cubic meters of annual water supply. In the future, it is expected that 1 million tons per every day of desalination seawater will be connected with water supply pipeline in Beijing and surrounding cities.
